Since 2015 the government has invested over £200m to support the development and implementation of automated vehicles. Over that time we have seen and been part of significant progress and rapid development of automated technology to meet this vision as well as the development and use of dedicated test beds to test and validate the new technologies.
But what does it take to initiate an automated vehicle future?
For this podcast – we aim to offer insights into the current work that is being carried out at TRL ahead of an automated vehicle future.
To that end we have gathered a team of experts including Oliver Howes, Ben Simpson, Will Perren and Camilla Fowler.

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users in Great Britain, and helmets play an important role in reducing the severity of motorcyclist head injuries during collisions. The Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP), launched by the Department for Transport (DfT), is a consumer information scheme that seeks to provide information about the relative safety of motorcycle helmets and advice on helmet selection for riders. For this latest project, TRL has been given the task of collecting, reviewing and critically evaluating the available scientific evidence with a view to recommending updates for the SHARP scheme.
In this TRL podcast, TRL’s Phil Martin and Imperial College London’s Mazdak Ghajari discuss the latest project and what the expectations are for future changes.

The data collected from road collisions has built a knowledge base that shapes the regulations and standards that keep UK roads safe.
However, with the growth of progressively autonomous vehicles, the range and the nature of the sources of data is expanding and providing a high-resolution picture of safety. With the number of road casualties plateauing over the last decade, is it time to review current safety monitoring, to embrace the opportunities that new technology can deliver?
In this podcast, our experts (Camilla Fowler and David Hynd) discuss the journey ahead, and the steps that need to be taken.
